Zulu

In 1879, throughout the Zulu wars, man-of-the-people, Lt. John Chard and snooty Lt Gonville Bromhead have been responsible for protecting the isolated Natal outpost of Rorke’s Drift from tribal hordes, holding out through an Alamo-like siege till they are overwhelmed, discarding the struggle, but moving down in history as heroes. 150 soldiers defended a supply channel against a few 4000 Zulus, assisted by the Martini-Henry gun “with some guts behind it”. Over the hundred years as the Victoria Cross has been made for valour and intense guts beyond that normally expected of their British soldier accountable for the enemy just 1344 have already been granted. Eleven of them were obtained from their defenders of the mission station at Rorke’s Drift, Natal, January 22nd into the 23rd 1879.
