PATHS OF THE SOUL follows a gaggle of Tibetan villagers who go away their households and houses to make a “bowing pilgrimage” — laying their our bodies flat on the floor after each few steps — alongside the 2,000-kilometre highway to Lhasa. Although equally dedicated to the journey, all of them have totally different causes: one traveller must cleanse dangerous household karma; one other, a butcher, desires to clean the animals’ bloodstains from his soul; and one other pilgrim, sensing the finish is close to, hopes that prayers and prostrations will break the chain of trigger and impact decided by his life’s actions. Throughout their months on the highway, a child is born, they meet fellow travellers, and their resolve is put to the check by harsh snowstorms and bodily fatigue.
