A Very Long Engagement

In 1919, Mathilde has been 19 yearsold. A couple of years earlier, her fiancé Manech left for the front at the Somme. Like countless others he had been “murdered on the field of battle.” It’s written in white and black to the state note. However, Mathilde refuses to trust it. If Manech had expired, she’d understand. She moans to her intuition too closely because she’d on the previous thread of trust connecting her to her fan. A prior sergeant informs her vain that Manech expired in the no man’s property of a trench called Bingo Crepescule, at the company of four additional men condemned to expire for untoward wounds.
